The ’90s were filled with iconic moments that shaped childhoods and pop culture. Also thoroughly changed their lifestyle, fashion choices, retro songs and many more. If you grew up in this era, these 10 things will definitely take you right back to long forgotten good old days.

1. The Sound of Dial-Up Internet

Before fast Wi-Fi, getting online meant enduring the loud beeps and screeches of a dial-up modem. And if someone picked up the phone while you were connected? Instant disconnection! Now, the new generation feels up this experience of going to museums, and gets to see what it was like to go back to the good old days. What an experience it was!

2. Tamagotchis and Virtual Pets

Tamagotchis were a test of responsibility.

  • These tiny digital pets needed constant care, and if you forgot about them, they’d “die,” leaving you heartbroken.
  • They were a constant style found in teen magazines then converted to pixel art(yes art). They were worn like a wristwatch in the initial concept, hence the portmanteau name.
  • For kids, it’s a safe, fun toy that teaches nurturing instincts and responsibility.

3. Saturday Morning Cartoons

Saturday, Sunday mornings were all about cartoons, cartoons and cartoons.

  • Shows like Rugrats, Animaniacs, Power Rangers, SCooby- Doo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and X-Men kept kids entertained for hours, hours and hours.
  • In India it was all about Door Darshan (DD).

4. VHS Tapes and Rewinding

Movies came on VHS tapes, and the dreaded task of rewinding before returning them to Blockbuster was all too familiar. Some players even had a quick rewind feature!

These tapes had manual rewiring, which was a different experience, and a good pastime.

5. Nickelodeon and Disney Channel

Nickelodeon brought hits like Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and more hits like Legends of the Hidden Temple, while Disney Channel offered classics like Lizzie McGuire, Hannah Montana and Even Stevens.

6. Collecting Pogs and Trading Cards

Pogs were the ultimate playground craze, and trading Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh! cards was a rite of passage, although still growing in this era with kids too(Pokemon GO). Rare holographic cards were highly sought after.

7. Recording Songs from the Radio

Creating mixtapes meant sitting by the radio with a cassette in hand, waiting for the perfect song. It was frustrating when the DJ talked over the intro. It was a favourite pastime to record songs and listen to them while travelling. Enjoying and travelling without music was a no no for oldies too!

8. Beanie Babies Mania

Beanie Babies were more than toys; they were collectibles. Many believed they’d be worth a fortune one day, so kids kept their tags on and traded them at school.

9. Video Game Console Wars

The 1990s witnessed the rise of popular game systems such as the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Sega Genesis and others. Super Mario 64, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Crash Bandicoot were important parts of my childhood. However, now kids also tend to play more advanced games like PUBG and Call Of Duty.

10. Slap Bracelets and Mood Rings

Fashion was quirky, with slap-bracelets becoming really unknowingly popular and mood-rings that changed color based on temperature, making kids feel magical and giddy and happy.

Conclusion

The ’90s were a time of unforgettable trends and moments that defined a generation, what a great era it was! Even though technology has changed, those memories still hold a special place for anyone who lived through them. What ’90s trend do you miss most?
